A Community of Exceptional Nurses
As a member of CCSC — the Critical Care Societies Collaborative — AACN joins three other major professional and scientific societies to bring important critical care issues to the forefront of public policy and healthcare. AACN, AACP — American College of Chest Physicians, ATS — American Thoracic Society and SCCM — Society of Critical Care Medicine accomplish their shared goals through research, patient care, advocacy, education and communication initiatives.
The CCSC partnered with the U.S. Critical Illness and Injury Trials Group (USCIITG) to define the first comprehensive agenda for critical care research. The report, “Multisociety Task Force for Critical Care Research: Key Issues and Recommendations,” appears in the January 2012 issue of AACN’s American Journal of Critical Care and other CCSC partner journals.
In 2011, the CCSC and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services launched a national awards program to recognize teams of critical care professionals and healthcare institutions for excellence in the reduction and elimination of healthcare-associated infections.
The CCSC issues consensus statements related to healthcare policy issues such as National Quality Forum measures, patient consent in quality improvement projects, critical care workforce shortage and end-of-life care.
Each May, CCSC partners educate the public about the vital role of critical care professionals and quality care as part of National Critical Care Awareness and Recognition Month.
Communication and collaboration among CCSC members enhances each group’s activities and accomplishments. CCSC leaders update members on current initiatives at each organization’s annual clinical meeting.
The CCSC is recognized by numerous U.S. government agencies and it works closely with HHS and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. With more than 150,000 dues-paying members who care for the majority of critically ill and injured patients in the United States, no other entity better represents critical care providers or the patients they serve.
