2. Call for Comment: Joint Commission 2009 Patient Safety Goals
The Joint Commission is requesting feedback on proposed goals and requirements for its 2009 National Patient Safety Goals. The draft goals focus on patient identification, safe use of medications, reducing the risk of healthcare-associated infections, medication reconciliation, encouraging patients’ active involvement in their care, and the “universal protocol” for preventing wrong site, procedure or person surgery. The deadline to respond is Feb. 27, 2008.

5. Research: Predictors of Cognitive Dysfunction After Major Noncardiac Surgery (Abstract)
Researchers in this study found that although cognitive dysfunction is common in adult patients of all ages at hospital discharge after major noncardiac surgery, only the elderly (aged 60 yr or older) are at significant risk for long-term cognitive problems. Patients with postoperative cognitive dysfunction are at an increased risk of death in the first year after surgery.
