3. Research: Increase in Adult Clostridium Difficile–related Hospitalizations, Fatalities (Free Article)
Virulence of and deaths from Clostridium difficile–associated disease (CDAD) are on the rise in the U.S. The incidence of adult CDAD hospitalizations doubled from 5.5 cases per 10,000 people in 2000 to 11.2 in 2005 and the CDAD-related age-adjusted case-fatality rate rose from 1.2% in 2000 to 2.2% in 2004.

5. Research: Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting Boost Long-term Survival and Enhances Quality of Life (Abstract)
Coronary artery bypass grafting is associated with excellent 10-year survival and quality of life, according to results of this recent study.

6. Research: Frequency, Cost of CABG Surgery Complications: Results From the United States Medicare Program (Abstract)
Despite ongoing improvements in outcomes, major complications remain common after coronary artery bypass grafting and add substantially to hospital costs for these procedures, according to this research based on complications experienced by Medicare beneficiaries who received CABG. The findings suggest that the potential cost savings of redirecting resources currently spent on treating complications help make the case for investing in patient safety initiatives and best practices guidelines that reduce selected complications.
