MAY IS NATIONAL CRITICAL CARE AWARENESS AND RECOGNITION MONTH. CELEBRATE!

1. News: Recall of Contaminated Heparin Products
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is asking for the assistance of nurses and other healthcare providers to end the continued use of contaminated heparin products and to report adverse events which may be heparin-related. Recall information on injectable heparin products and heparin flush solutions is available at http://www.fda.gov/cder/drug/infopage/heparin/default.htm#recalls . Information about medical devices which may contain, or be coated with, heparin can be found at http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/safety/heparin-device-list.html . Events should be reported to http://www.fda.gov/medwatch/ .

2. Resource: Disaster Preparedness Report Highlights Surge Capacity, Legal Protection and Medical Rationing
“Definitive Care for the Critically Ill During a Disaster,” a report published as a supplement to the May issue of CHEST, offers guidance for hospitals, medical professionals and public health authorities on how to prepare for and provide essential critical care when the need for critical care resources far exceeds availability. This is the first report to offer a comprehensive emergency mass critical care protocol in the U.S. AACN is a member of the task force that developed the report.

A review of the Health Resources and Services Administration statistics on critical care manpower indicate the present structure for training critical care physicians through combined pulmonary/critical care fellowships is, and will remain, woefully inadequate to meet demand.
