MAY IS NATIONAL CRITICAL CARE AWARENESS AND RECOGNITION MONTH. CELEBRATE!

1. News: AACN Adds Beacon Award for Pediatrics
Pediatric units demonstrating excellence in acute and critical care now have the opportunity to be recognized as part of the prestigious Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence program. Applications for the new Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence-Pediatrics are now being accepted.

2. Resource: NTI 2008 Program and Proceedings Available Online
Although the Program and Proceedings serves as a roadmap for participants during AACN’s annual National Teaching Institute & Critical Care Exposition, it is a valuable year-round reference for acute and critical care nurses. We are pleased to provide, for the first time, online access to the complete publication for the 2008 NTI. We invite you to explore the information, including session summaries and the list of faculty.

3. Research: Cross-checking of the Physician's Transfer Report by Intensive Care Nurses (Abstract)
Errors in ICU transfer reports are frequent and may be potentially harmful. ICU nurses may help to effectively and accurately intercept those inaccuracies by cross-checking the reports, therefore reducing the exportation of errors to the ward.

4. Reminder: Free AACN Bookstore Shipping Ends May 31

5. Research: Pulmonary Complications After Noncardiac Surgery (Abstract)
Postoperative pulmonary complications are an important cause of postoperative morbidity and mortality after major noncardiac surgery. Potential strategies to reduce the postoperative complications include risk stratification for pneumonia and respiratory failure, adequate postoperative analgesia, short-acting neuromuscular blockade, postoperative lung expansion modalities, selective use of postoperative nasogastric decompression, laparoscopic surgery where possible and nutrition.
