Apply for HAI reduction award by Dec. 19

For the third year in a three-year initiative, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services and the Critical Care Societies Collaborative, of which AACN is a member, are sponsoring a program to recognize teams of critical care professionals and healthcare institutions for outstanding leadership to eliminate or reduce healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). Apply for an award by Wednesday, Dec. 19.

Would you like to be the guest emcee at the 2013 National Teaching Institute & Critical Care Exposition (NTI), May 18-23 in Boston? Article in CCN discusses decision-making in older patients with hearing loss

"Hearing Loss in Older Critical Care Patients: Participation in Decision Making," in December's Critical Care Nurse (CCN), discusses hearing loss in older adults, including incidence, pathophysiology, diagnosis and impact, and presents strategies to help patients participate in making decisions about their care. The AACN Synergy Model is used as a framework to understand and improve patient participation.


CNE Article in CCN: Abdominal compartment syndrome in children

December's Critical Care Nurse (CCN) includes "Abdominal Compartment Syndrome in Children," a continuing nursing education (CNE) article that presents an intra-abdominal hypertension assessment algorithm and discusses risk factors, monitoring and management.


Rapid saline loading significantly increases filling pressures

"Hemodynamic Responses to Rapid Saline Loading: The Impact of Age, Sex, and Heart Failure," published online Nov. 21 by Circulation, finds that filling pressures, as measured by pulmonary capillary wedge pressure and mean pulmonary arterial pressure, "rise significantly with volume loading, even in normal volunteers." Older women and patients who have heart failure with preserved ejection fraction showed the largest increases.


Antibiotic stewardship key to preventing Clostridium difficile in the ICU

"Preventing Clostridium difficile Infection in the Intensive Care Unit" requires meticulous contact precautions, hand hygiene, environmental disinfection and "most importantly, antibiotic stewardship," according to January's Critical Care Clinics.

FDA announces recall of hydrocodone bitartrate and acetaminophen tablets

On Dec. 7, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Silver Spring, Md., announced that Qualitest, Huntsville, Ala., has voluntarily recalled 101 lots of hydrocodone bitartrate and acetaminophen tablets, because some tablets may contain a higher dosage of acetaminophen than what is listed on the label.


CDC highlights impact of unsafe injection practices

More than 150,000 have been affected by unsafe injection practices, according to "The Impact of Unsafe Injection Practices in U.S. Healthcare Settings," released Nov. 28 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, which updates information on the issue. The CDC's One & Only Campaign empowers patients and healthcare providers to insist on safe injections and provides education resources.


Nurses' float in Rose Parade

On Nov. 28, Bare Root, Inc., Pauma Valley, Calif., announced the 10 riders for the nurses' float in the 124th Rose Parade, Jan. 1, 2013, in Pasadena, Calif. The nurse riders represent diverse backgrounds and disciplines, and include several AACN members. Bare Root, Inc., a nonprofit group, consists of five nurses who have raised money for the themed float, "A Healing Place."

AACN CSI Academy in Boston, North Carolina and Indianapolis

Since AACN Clinical Scene Investigator (CSI) Academy expanded to greater Boston with the launch of a seven-hospital cohort in November, hospitals in three areas are now participating in this program. AACN CSI Academy is a national nurse leadership and skill-building program that empowers bedside nurses to improve patient outcomes, with bottom-line impact.
