Article in CCN discusses telenursing in the ICU

"Telenursing in the Intensive Care Unit: Transforming Nursing Practice," in December's Critical Care Nurse (CCN), describes tele-ICU nursing interventions that contributed to patient care at a health system for one year.

CNE article in CCN: Hematologic drugs in treatment of MI

December's Critical Care Nurse (CCN) includes "Clots Kill: Hematologic Pharmacology for ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction," a continuing nursing education (CNE) article that uses a case study format to discuss the role of hematologic drugs in the treatment of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (MI).

Statins don't decrease muscle strength

High-dose atorvastatin for six months does not decrease average muscle strength or exercise performance, according to "The Effect of Statins on Skeletal Muscle Function," but the study, published online Nov. 26 by Circulation, "confirms the undocumented impression that statins increase muscle complaints" and documents increased average creatine kinase, which suggests mild muscle injury even in those without symptoms.

Atrial fibrillation increases risk of cardiac death

Atrial fibrillation is associated with an increased risk of sudden- and nonsudden-cardiac death, according to "Atrial Fibrillation and the Risk of Sudden Cardiac Death: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study and Cardiovascular Health Study," published online Nov. 26, by the Archives of Internal Medicine.

FDA announces changes in heparin labeling

On Dec. 6, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Silver Spring, Md., announced heparin label changes that will go into effect May 1, 2013. The label changes require manufacturers of Heparin Lock Flush Solution, USP and Heparin Sodium Injection, USP to clearly state the strength of the entire container of medication followed by how much medication is in 1 milliliter (mL). These modifications will eliminate the need to calculate the total amount of heparin medication in a product containing more than 1 mL, which reduces the risk of medication error.
