Submit a speaker or poster abstract for the National Patient Safety Foundation's 15th Annual Patient Safety Congress, May 8-10, 2013, in New Orleans. Speaker abstracts will be considered in the areas of health information technology, risk prevention, employee engagement, transformation models for safe healthcare delivery, and patient and family engagement. Speaker deadline is Nov. 25; poster deadline is Dec. 28.

 
 

Submit poster abstract for National Nursing Ethics Conference

Submit a poster abstract for Ethics of Caring's second National Nursing Ethics Conference, March 21-22, 2013, in Los Angeles. The conference theme is "Cultivating Ethical Awareness: Moments of Truth," and the objective is to motivate and empower participants with skills, courage and knowledge to speak confidently and to be creative and steadfast when tackling ethical challenges. Nominate for 2014 Distinguished Research Lectureship

Nominate a nationally recognized nurse researcher, who must be an AACN member, to be the next AACN Distinguished Research Lecturer. Honorees represent a legacy of contributions to acute and critical care nursing. Funded by a grant from Philips Healthcare, Andover, Mass., the award recognizes nurses whose program of research significantly influences high acuity and critical care. Submit nominations by Saturday, Dec. 1.

 
 

Apply for HAI reduction award

For the third year, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services and the Critical Care Societies Collaborative, of which AACN is a member, are sponsoring a program to recognize teams of critical care professionals and healthcare institutions for outstanding leadership to eliminate or reduce healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). Apply for an award by Dec. 19.

 
 

Submit abstracts for TeamSTEPPS National Conference

Submit a speaker or poster abstract for the TeamSTEPPS National Conference 2013, June 12-13, in Dallas. Conference organizers will consider abstracts on a variety of topics, including implementation, education, measurement, leadership, leveraging technology, and developing and engaging staff. Deadline: Dec. 21.

"Communication by Nurses in the Intensive Care Unit: Qualitative Analysis of Domains of Patient-Centered Care," in November's American Journal of Critical Care (AJCC), concludes that understanding how nurses engage in patient-centered communication can guide future interventions to improve patient-centered care.

 
 

CNE of the Month: Study in AJCC finds many family members' psych symptoms linger more than three months after ICU experience

"Psychological Symptoms of Family Members of High-Risk Intensive Care Unit Patients," a continuing nursing education (CNE) article in November's American Journal of Critical Care (AJCC), finds that family members' symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety and depression significantly decreased three months after the ICU experience but noted that many family members still had significant risk for PTSD and borderline anxiety and depression.

 
 

Device-associated infections among neonatal ICU patients

"Device-Associated Infections Among Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Patients: Incidence and Associated Pathogens Reported to the National Healthcare Safety Network, 2006-2008," in December's Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology, finds that neonates who weigh 750 grams or less were most likely to have device-associated infections, and except for ventilator associated pneumonia, infection incident rates didn't vary significantly between children's and general hospitals.

SCCM identifies shortage of intravenous loop diuretics

On Nov. 16, the Society of Critical Care Medicine's (SCCM's) Drug Shortages Task Force, Mount Prospect, Ill., announced it has identified a shortage leading to variable availability of intravenous loop diuretics, including bumetanide, furosemide and torsemide. Access information about drug shortages from the American Society of Heath-System Pharmacists, Bethesda, Md.

 
 

Track new developments in fungal meningitis outbreak
