Permissive Hypotension in Bleeding Trauma Patients: Helpful or Not and When?” a continuing nursing education (CNE) article in December’s Critical Care Nurse (CCN), finds that permissive hypotension may be beneficial when treating bleeding in trauma patients.

 
 

Perioperative steroids increase risk of pressure ulcers

Perioperative corticosteroid administration is an independent risk factor for pressure ulcers in cardiovascular surgical patients, according to “Perioperative Corticosteroids Administration as a Risk Factor for Pressure Ulcers in Cardiovascular Surgical Patients: A Retrospective Study,” posted online Dec. 10 in International Wound Journal.

The Joint Commission releases report on new alarm safety goal

On Dec. 11, The Joint Commission released an R3 Report for the new National Patient Safety Goal (NPSG) that requires accredited hospitals and critical access hospitals to improve the safety of their clinical alarm systems. The alarm NPSG is being implemented in two phases: The first begins Jan. 1, 2014, to heighten awareness of potential risks associated with clinical alarms. The second phase, effective Jan. 1, 2016, introduces requirements to mitigate the risks.

 
 

Nurses again top Gallup honesty, ethics poll

On Dec. 16, Gallup, Washington, D.C., announced that nurses topped its annual poll on the honesty and ethical standards of various professions, with 82 percent ranking nurses “very high” or “high.” Nurses have received the highest rating every year since 1999, the first year Gallup included them, except 2001, when firefighters were number one.

 
 

Updated guideline for hypertension management

2014 Evidence-Based Guideline for the Management of High Blood Pressure in Adults: Report From the Panel Members Appointed to the Eighth Joint National Committee (JNC 8),” published online Dec. 18 in JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, states, “There is strong evidence to support treating hypertensive persons aged 60 years or older to a BP goal of less than 150/90 mm Hg and hypertensive persons 30 through 59 years of age to a diastolic goal of less than 90 mm Hg.”

The tool provides a method for assessing patients’ ability to understand and use education materials, including audiovisual and print formats.

 
 

Parenteral nutrition safety recommendations

Access “A.S.P.E.N. Parenteral Nutrition Safety Consensus Recommendations,” published online Nov. 26 in Journal of Parenteral & Enteral Nutrition. The recommendations should be used in conjunction with other publications from the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (A.S.P.E.N.), Silver Spring, Md.

Access the AACN Practice Alert: Assessing Pain in the Critically Ill Adult, which provides quick access to evidence-based nursing practices recommended by AACN to gauge pain in adults who may not be able to self-report. The alert outlines four nursing practices — with supporting evidence — to better assess pain in critically ill adults to optimize outcomes and improve patient satisfaction. AACN is updating AACN Scope and Standards for Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs) and invites comments on the proposed revisions. Read “Scope of Practice,” “Standards of Clinical Practice” and “Standards of Professional Performance.” The confidential, online survey includes links to these documents. Then follow the prompts to respond to questions associated with each section. As clinical experts, influencers and mentors, your input is extremely important to help AACN support the vital role of the CNS. Comments will be accepted through Monday, Jan. 20, 2014. AACN will offer an Adult CCRN certification review course, as a seven-part live webinar, beginning Monday, Feb. 17, 2014. This comprehensive course helps prospective CCRN candidates prepare for the exam by reaffirming clinical knowledge and removing uncertainty about what to expect. The 2.5-hour sessions will feature an interactive learning experience with teacher and peer-to-peer chats, knowledge check questions and support materials. The webinar awards 14.5 continuing nursing education (CNE) contact hours. The $159 (individual) or $999 (groups up to 30) fee includes 90-day access to this series of archived webinar recordings.
