New guidelines may reduce unnecessary evaluation of early-onset sepsis in infants
Use of guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, for Group B Streptococcus (GBS) prophylaxis “may eliminate” a quarter of the evaluations for early-onset sepsis in asymptomatic infants born at 35 weeks or greater gestation, according to “Neonatal Early-Onset Sepsis Evaluations Among Well-Appearing Infants: Projected Impact of Changes in CDC GBS Guidelines.” The guidelines will help reduce unnecessary evaluations and antibiotic exposure, notes the study in March’s Journal of Perinatology.
