Registration is now open for AACN Clinical Priorities 2014

Register to attend AACN Clinical Priorities 2014 (formerly known as A Slice of AACN NTI), April 15-17, MGM Grand, Las Vegas. Workshop topics include alarm management, healthy work environments, ethics and preventing healthcare-associated infections. The program includes full-day clinical sessions on neuro/trauma/stroke, sepsis, cardiovascular and common clinical disorders in high acuity patients. The Importance of Tracheostomy Progression in the Intensive Care Unit,” a continuing nursing education (CNE) article in February’s Critical Care Nurse (CCN), discusses a systematic method for tracheostomy progression and describes how critical care nurses can facilitate this process.

 
 

Pediatric patients with AML often require intensive care resources

One-third of pediatric patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) “required intensive care resources within 9 months of diagnosis,” but mortality rates “were substantially lower than previously reported,” concludes “Outcome of Pediatric Acute Myeloid Leukemia Patients Receiving Intensive Care in the United States,” in February’s Pediatric Critical Care Medicine.

News from the FDA

On Feb. 7, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Rockville, Md., notified healthcare professionals to follow up with patients who received calcium gluconate 10% injections made by Rx Formulations, Mesa, Ariz., between Nov. 7 and Dec. 11, 2013. The injections were recalled Dec. 13, 2013, because of microbial contamination in lot #778961.

On Feb. 4, the FDA launched “The Real Cost,” a national public education campaign to prevent youth tobacco use and reduce the number of children ages 12 to 17 who become regular smokers.

 

Helicopter transport increases survival

Patients transported to a hospital by helicopter have a better chance of surviving traumatic injury than those transported by ground ambulance, despite having more severe injury and needing more surgical interventions, according to “Retrospective Review of Injury Severity, Interventions and Outcomes Among Helicopter and Nonhelicopter Transport Patients at a Level 1 Urban Trauma Centre,” in February’s Canadian Journal of Surgery.

Assessment and management of dyspnea crisis

October 2013’s Annals of the American Thoracic Society includes “An Official American Thoracic Society Workshop Report: Assessment and Palliative Management of Dyspnea Crisis,” an interdisciplinary consensus document that addresses assessment, ethical and professional considerations, development of patient education and quality improvement. The panel, assembled by American Thoracic Society, New York, included AACN representatives.

 
 

Immunization schedules

On Feb. 3, Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report published the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ recommended 2014 immunization schedule for people 19 and older and for those 0 through 18 years old.

Although registration for the Alarm Systems Management Webinar Series is closed, free access to recorded webinars and resources is available following each webinar. The recording of the Jan. 28 live webinar, “Use of Middleware in Alarm Management: Ancillary Notification and Obtaining Alarm Data,” is ready for viewing, and CNEs are available. Sponsored by AACN, the Healthcare Technology Safety Institute (HTSI) and seven other industry leaders, the series helps healthcare teams comply with The Joint Commission’s 2014 National Patient Safety Goal regarding alarms. New ACCNS-N exam

The ACCNS-N certification exam, fully aligned with the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation: Licensure, Accreditation, Certification and Education, was launched Feb. 12, for clinical nurse specialists (CNSs) who completed a neonatal CNS graduate program with a Consensus Model-based curriculum covering wellness through acute care. AACN Certification Corporation now offers four new exams — ACNPC-AG, ACCNS-AG, ACCNS-P and ACCNS — that are among the first advanced practice nursing certification exams to be revised to reflect the new standards of the Consensus Model, which goes into full effect in 2015.

Preregistration using a special NTI exam application is required. Payment of exam fees must accompany your application and arrive at AACN no later than Friday, April 18.
