CDC issues warning for pH1N1 influenza

On Dec. 24, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, issued a health advisory on early reports of severe respiratory illness among young and middle-aged adults, many of whom were infected with the influenza A (H1N1) pdm09 (pH1N1) virus. Multiple pH1N1-associated hospitalizations, including many requiring ICU admission, and some fatalities have been reported. The CDC advises clinicians to encourage all patients 6 months of age and older who have not yet received an influenza vaccine this season to get one and to encourage all persons with influenza-like illness who are at high risk for influenza to seek care promptly.

News from the FDA

On Dec. 27, the FDA announced that Baxter Intl., Deerfield, Ill., has recalled one lot of 5% Dextrose Injection, USP and four lots of 0.9% Sodium Chloride Injection, USP because of particulate matter found in the solutions.

On Dec. 24, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Silver Spring, Md., announced that Hospira, Lake Forest, Ill., has recalled one lot of Lidocaine HCl Injection, USP, 2%, 5 mL Single-Dose Vial because of particulate matter on the inner surface and floating in the solution.

Adult, pediatric clinical nurse specialist exams align with consensus model

ACCNS-AG and ACCNS-P are entry-level advanced practice certifications for nurses educated at the graduate level as a clinical nurse specialist (CNS) to provide advanced nursing care across the continuum of healthcare — from wellness through acute care — to meet the specialized needs of the adult-gerontology and pediatric patient populations, respectively. The ACCNS exams align with the requirements of the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation: Licensure, Accreditation, Certification and Education. Learn more.
