Choosing Wisely: Critical care practices to question
AACN — as part of the Critical Care Societies Collaborative (CCSC) — has identified five routine critical care practices that should be questioned as a patient’s care plan is developed, because they may not always be necessary and could, in fact, be harmful. The release of the CCSC list is part of the Choosing Wisely national campaign initiated by the ABIM Foundation in 2012 to help patients and their healthcare providers talk about what tests and treatments are really necessary. To date, more than 60 leading medical specialty societies have released specific, evidence-based recommendations on more than 200 procedures to question in order to make wise decisions on the most appropriate care, based on individual situations.

On Jan. 8, the FDA warned that using more than one dose in 24 hours of over-the-counter sodium phosphate drugs to treat constipation can cause rare but serious harm to the kidneys and heart, and even death. Those at high risk for adverse effects include young children; individuals older than 55; patients who are dehydrated; patients with kidney disease, bowel obstruction, or inflammation of the bowel and patients who are using medications, such as diuretics, that may affect kidney function.

The document defines tele-ICU nursing and identifies the guidelines and essential elements to help tele-ICU nurses, managers and program directors evaluate their individual or unit practice. Download the guidelines as a free PDF, or purchase a booklet through AACN’s website.
