Participate in survey on bedside technology and nursing workarounds in ICU

Jennifer Browne, a doctoral candidate at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, invites critical care nurses to participate in a study exploring the solutions and workarounds that bedside nurses use when there is a mismatch between nursing workflow and computer or computer-use policies. The survey takes about 10-15 minutes to complete. Email Browne with your questions, or call her at (210) 296-7511.

Clinicians reluctant to discuss EOL care with heart failure patients

Healthcare providers are reluctant to discuss end-of-life (EOL) care with heart failure patients and their families, because “they feel uncomfortable broaching the topic or lack time,” according to a new study presented June 4 at the Quality of Care and Outcomes Research 2014 Scientific Sessions in Baltimore.

June’s Critical Care Medicine includes the following studies:

Randomized ICU Trials Do Not Demonstrate an Association Between Interventions That Reduce Delirium Duration and Short-Term Mortality: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis” concludes the current evidence doesn’t support that ICU interventions for reducing delirium reduce short-term mortality.

Quality of Communication in Interpreted Versus Noninterpreted PICU Family Meetings” finds that physician-family communication is poor overall. The study, which analyzed 21 English and nine Spanish family meetings, suggests physicians can improve communication at these meetings by “increasing the use of elements of shared decision-making, improving the balance between physician and family speech, and decreasing the complexity of physician speech.”

Electronic decision-support tools increase compliance

Optimizing Care of Adults With Congenital Heart Disease in a Pediatric Cardiovascular ICU Using Electronic Clinical Decision Support,” in June’s Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, concludes that decision support tools increase compliance with “national adult postoperative performance measures.”

Cases of measles exceed reported record

On May 29, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, reported 288 cases of measles from Jan. 1 through May 23, which surpasses the highest reported yearly total since measles elimination was declared in the U.S. in 2000. The article, in MMWR: Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, states, “The large number of cases this year emphasizes the need for health-care providers to have a heightened awareness of the potential for measles in their communities and the importance of vaccination to prevent measles.”
