CNE of the month: Article in CCN reviews neuromonitoring techniques

June’s Critical Care Nurse (CCN) includes the CNE article “Neuromonitoring Indications and Utility in the Intensive Care Unit, which discusses indications, use and applicability to patient care for transcranial Doppler monitoring and electrophysiology.


July’s Critical Care Medicine includes the following:

Improved Prognosis of Septic Shock in Patients With Cirrhosis: A Multicenter Study” concludes that the outcome for these patients has markedly improved over time and finds the in-ICU survival rate for 2010 was 35 percent.

Prospective Study on the Clinical Course and Outcomes in Transfusion-Related Acute Lung Injury” notes that TRALI is “associated with substantial in-hospital morbidity and mortality,” and patients with possible TRALI have even higher morbidity and mortality.


Cardiac rehabilitation program

Efficacy of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program in Patients With End-Stage Heart Failure, Heart Transplant Patients, and Left Ventricular Assist Device Recipients,” in the November 2013 Transplantation Proceedings, finds that an eight-week supervised exercise program improved functional capacity, quality of life and depression among the patients studied.

FDA announcements

On June 20, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Silver Spring, Maryland, announced that ConvaTec, Bridgewater, New Jersey, has recalled its Flexi-Seal CONTROL Fecal Management System Kit, because inconsistent functioning of the auto-valve has led to serious injury and one death.

On June 18, the FDA announced that Hospira, Lake Forest, Illinois, has recalled one lot of 0.5% Marcaine (Bupivacaine HCl Injection, USP), 30 mL, Single-dose Vial – Preservative Free due to a confirmed customer report of particulate embedded in the glass vial and visible particulate in the solution.


Sentinel Event Alert on misuse of vials

On June 16, The Joint Commission, Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois, released the Sentinel Event Alert “Preventing Infection From the Misuse of Vials.” Thousands of patients have been adversely affected by the misuse of single-dose/single-use and multiple-dose vials. Misuse of the vials has harmed patients through occurrences of blood-borne pathogens and associated infections, including hepatitis B and C virus, meningitis and epidural abscesses. The alert contains several recommendations for improvement, including using one needle, one syringe, only one time.

CDC information on sepsis

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, is working to increase sepsis awareness and improve treatment. Its website includes information for patients, clinical tools and guidelines, initiatives to improve survival, data reports on the incidence of sepsis, a bibliography of selected chapters on sepsis from medical textbooks and links to additional resources.


Review courses for prospective CMC and CSC certificants

To help CMC (cardiac medicine) and CSC (cardiac surgery) subspecialty certification candidates prepare for their exam, AACN offers certification review courses online and on CD-ROM. The courses provide comprehensive, topic-specific content with knowledge checks throughout. The CMC review, presented by Leanna Miller, offers 11.0 CNE hours; the CSC review, presented by Myra Ellis, offers 12.4 CNE hours. Both versions are available through AACN’s online bookstore, where members receive a significant discount.

CCRN-K: New certification launches in September

CCRN-K — a certification program for nursing professionals who in their practice apply knowledge in a way that influences patients, nurses and/or organizations to have a positive impact on acutely and/or critically ill adult, pediatric or neonatal patients, but do not work at the bedside — launches this September. CCRN-K may be obtained through an initial exam or as a renewal option for CCRN and CCRN-E certificants.
