Patient Predictors of Dexmedetomidine Effectiveness for Sedation in Intensive Care Units,” a CNE article in March’s American Journal of Critical Care (AJCC), notes that effective sedation with dexmedetomidine is influenced by specific patient characteristics, including severity of illness and use of antidepressants at home.

 
 

Study in AJCC finds pressure mapping reduces pressure ulcers

March’s American Journal of Critical Care (AJCC) includes “Continuous Bedside Pressure Mapping and Rates of Hospital-Associated Pressure Ulcers in a Medical Intensive Care Unit,” which finds that mapping provides real-time visual feedback for repositioning patients and significantly reduces the number of pressure ulcers.

 
 

Electronic checklist and dashboard sustain reduced CLABSI rates

Using an electronic medical record-enhanced checklist to prevent central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI), combined with unit-wide, real-time display of adherence, increases compliance with evidence-based catheter care and sustains decreased CLABSI rates, according to “Use of Electronic Medical Record-Enhanced Checklist and Electronic Dashboard to Decrease CLABSIs,” published online Feb. 24 in Pediatrics.

 
 

Ramelteon may prevent delirium

Preventive Effects of Ramelteon on Delirium: A Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial,” posted online Feb. 19 in JAMA Psychiatry, concludes that administering ramelteon nightly to “elderly patients admitted for acute care may provide protection against delirium.”

American Diabetes Association Alert! Day

On March 25, American Diabetes Association Alert! Day, encourage your community to take the brief Diabetes Risk Test to find out if they might develop type 2 diabetes — and be sure you take the test too, which is available year-round. Nearly 26 million children and adults in the U.S. have diabetes, and 25 percent — 7 million — don’t know they have it. An additional 79 million adults (one in three) have prediabetes.

 
 

News from the FDA

On March 7, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Silver Spring, Md., announced that Pfizer Inc., New York, recalled one lot of 30-count Effexor XR (venlafaxine HCl) 150 mg extended-release capsules, one lot of 90-count Effexor XR (venlafaxine HCl) 150 mg extended-release capsules and one lot of 90-count Greenstone (Peapack, N.J.)-branded venlafaxine HC1 150 mg extended-release capsules, because a pharmacist reported that one bottle of Pfizer’s Effexor XR contained one capsule of Tikosyn (dofetilide) in addition to Effexor XR capsules.

 
 

U.S. Preventive Services Task Force releases new recommendations

Vitamin, Mineral, and Multivitamin Supplements for the Primary Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease and Cancer: U.S. Preventive Services Task Force Recommendation Statement,” online Feb. 25 in Annals of Internal Medicine, finds insufficient evidence to assess the use of multivitamins and recommends against beta-carotene or vitamin E supplements for prevention.

New ACCNS-N exam

The ACCNS-N certification exam, fully aligned with the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation: Licensure, Accreditation, Certification and Education, was launched Feb. 12, for clinical nurse specialists (CNSs) who complete a neonatal CNS graduate program with a Consensus Model-based curriculum covering wellness through acute care. AACN Certification Corporation now offers four new exams — ACNPC-AG, ACCNS-AG, ACCNS-P and ACCNS-N — which are among the first advanced practice nursing certification exams to reflect the new standards of the Consensus Model, which goes into full effect in 2015.

 
 

AACN funds scholarships for 16 attendees at NIWI

For the fifth consecutive year, AACN’s Continuing Professional Development Scholarships program will help clinicians attend the Nurse in Washington Internship (NIWI) program, Washington, D.C., March 30-April 1. Thanks to AACN’s program, 16 nurses will join other healthcare professionals from across the country to gain firsthand knowledge on the health legislative process and meet with Capitol Hill representatives.
