Participate in a survey on family presence during resuscitation
Glynda Cochran, a doctoral candidate at University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, invites critical care nurses to participate in a study exploring whether attitudes and beliefs about family presence during resuscitation can predict critical care nurses’ intention to allow this practice. The confidential, online survey takes 20 minutes or less to complete. Email Cochran or Alice Hill, project adviser, if you have any questions.

CNE article in AJCC discusses feeding-tube placement
“Effectiveness of an Electromagnetic Feeding Tube Placement Device in Detecting Inadvertent Respiratory Placement,” a CNE article in May’s American Journal of Critical Care (AJCC), finds clinicians’ ability to place feeding tubes correctly by using such a device varies, and it questions the wisdom of eliminating radiographic confirmation of tube position before starting feedings.
Study in AJCC finds alarms remain patient safety issue
May’s American Journal of Critical Care (AJCC) includes “Attitudes and Practices Related to Clinical Alarms,” which finds that survey results from 2005-2006 compared to 2011 show no significant differences and that alarm hazards continue to be a significant patient safety concern.

News from the FDA
April 18 and April 22, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Silver Spring, Maryland, announced three recalls from Hospira, Lake Forest, Illinois:
Seven lots of Propofol Injectable Emulsion, 1%, 200 mg/20 mL (10 mg/mL), because of a glass defect on the interior neck of the vial

One lot of 0.25% Marcaine (Bupivacaine HCl Injection), 10 mL, single dose, preservative free, because of discolored solution with visible particles embedded in the glass
Sepsis increases postoperative thrombosis risk
Preoperative sepsis increases risk of thrombosis during and after surgery, according to a study of nearly 1.75 million surgical procedures that was presented at an American College of Cardiology meeting and reported online April 18 in Cardiology News. The more severe the sepsis, the greater the thrombosis risk; even early sepsis is associated with a 2.5-fold increased risk.
AACN Practice Alert: Delirium Assessment and Management
Studies show that delirium in the ICU often goes undetected and therefore untreated, leading to delirium-associated costs of between $4 billion and $16 billion annually in the U.S. While no FDA-approved drugs are available to treat delirium, this AACN Practice Alert explains that implementing early assessment, prevention and detection protocols such as the described ABCDE bundle reduces risk factors. Access all AACN Practice Alerts, which are provided free of charge.
