Putting this August Update together reminded me how quickly the year is passing, so I certainly hope everyone is enjoying their summer. Fall will be here before we know it, so let’s embrace these warm, long days while we can. I also want to thank all of you who have already returned your satisfaction survey. Spread the Word About AACN Chapters
It’s always a good time to spread the word about AACN chapters. Our more than 235 local chapters bring the AACN mission and vision to life across the United States in addition to chapters at U.S. military bases in Germany and Japan, and one in the People’s Republic of China.

If you don’t already have a relationship with your local chapter, consider making contact. This relationship could provide beneficial to everyone in promoting local events and courses. It’s easy to find a chapter to join. Use the “Find a Chapter” link at the top of the home page. Submit poster abstracts for NTI 2013
It’s time to submit poster abstracts for the 2013 National Teaching Institute & Critical Care Exposition (NTI 2013) — to be held Saturday, May 18, to Thursday, May 23, 2013, in Boston — in three categories: Research, Evidence-based Solutions and Chapter Best Practice. We hope you will familiarize yourself with the benefits behind being a poster presenter and share these with your colleagues. All those interested in submitting should read Poster Abstract Submission Guidelines first. Deadline is Friday, Sept. 14, 2012.

Multi-article Symposium on Tele-ICUs in Current ACC
Be on the lookout for a multi-article symposium in the July-September AACN Advanced Critical Care (ACC) that examines the leading-edge technology of tele-ICUs. “The Tele-ICU: A New Frontier in Critical Care Nursing Practice” examines different aspects of tele-ICU practice. Tele-ICU technology allows audio and video interaction between clinical teams in hospitals and remote sites to enhance clinical decision making support for high acuity and critical care.


Register for ‘AACN Progressive Care Pathways Conference’ by Sept. 4 and Save
AACN and Contemporary Forums continue their collaboration with the second annual AACN Progressive Care Pathways conference, Oct. 14-17, Paris Hotel, Las Vegas. This conference is geared for everyone working in stepdown, intermediate, telemetry, transitional, subacute, direct observation, emergency department and med-surg units that receive patients directly from the ICU. Attend a preconference on hemodynamic monitoring or progressive care pharmacology and stay for the main conference with topics such as “Preventing Respiratory Failure: Stop the Progression.” Register by Tuesday, Sept. 4, to obtain the early registration discount. Nurse Managers: Register for ‘AACN Nurse Manager Priorities’

New CCNS Renewal Requirements
The certification period for newly certified and renewing CCNSs is now five years, instead of four. The renewal fee remains the same. The CCNS Renewal Point program now includes optional activities such as professional publications or presentations, preceptorship and volunteer activities, in addition to requirements for acute care education programs granting CE, CME, CNE or academic credit. CCNSs who renew by CE Points (in two out of the three renewal options) after Jan. 1, 2014, must complete 150 CE Renewal Points, 25 of which must be in Pharmacology.
