November 2013 Ambassador Update: Timely Reminders
With the holiday season kicking off in just a few weeks, I first want to wish you a great Thanksgiving weekend. I hope you get to spend yours in a way that makes you feel most grateful for your blessings. I’m counting mine already (and you are on the list).
Secondly, I want to share a few AACN news items on topics I know you, your managers and your colleagues care about — certification and alarm management. Your team members might be particularly thankful for the heads-up on the discounted price for the PCCN certification review course.
Read on for that information and more.
50% Discount on Progressive Care Certification Review Course
For a limited time, AACN is offering a 50% discount on its on-demand PCCN (progressive care) certification review course with purchase of the exam.
“PCCN Review Course Online 2013” is based on a webinar presented by progressive care expert Carol Rauen. It features interactive learning with clinical content, knowledge checks and test-taking tips, and awards 13 continuing nursing education hours (Synergy CERP Category A).
The discounted on-demand prices for members/nonmembers, offered through April 2014, are $79.50/$99.50. Without exam registration, the on-demand prices are $159/$199.
A CD-ROM version, priced at $189/$226, is also available through AACN’s online bookstore.
2013 CCRN/CCRN-E Study of Practice
The CCRN/CCRN-E Study of Practice survey invitations have gone out to a sample of CCRNs and CCRN-Es across the country. Please encourage anyone who received an invitation to participate to assure a good response rate.
The results of the study of practice will help AACN update CCRN/CCRN-E test plans and will inform us on how best to support acute and critical care nurses by developing resources and providing education. AACN Certification Corporation conducts this type of evidence-based research as an accreditation requirement for each certification exam at least once every five years.
The survey can be completed in different sittings, as long as the same computer is used to access it. The deadline to complete this survey is Nov. 17, 2013.
Limited Time Remaining to Take ACNPC or CCNS Exam
Help spread the word that anyone wishing to take either the ACNPC or CCNS exam needs to allow enough time to apply for and pass the exam. AACN Certification Corporation will not offer the ACNPC and CCNS (adult, pediatric and neonatal) exams for initial certification after Dec. 31, 2014.
Current ACNPCs and CCNSs may continue to renew their certification into the future, as long as it does not lapse and renewal requirements are met.
The new Consensus Model-based ACNPC-AG exam has been available since January, 2013. New exams for ACCNS-AG and ACCNS-P launched in July, and a new exam for ACCNS-N is scheduled to launch in early 2014.

Free Access to Alarm Management Recorded Webinars
If your facility or your unit is preparing to comply with the Joint Commission’s 2014 National Patient Safety Goal regarding alarm management, another resource is available. This fall AACN, the Health Care Technology Institute (HTSI) and seven other industry leaders launched a seven-part webinar series on alarm management.
Webinar registration closed in October when maximum enrollment was quickly reached. However, free access to recorded webinars is available following each session.
HTSI is an initiative of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) Foundation.
