Nancy Freeland, MS, RN, CCRN, serves a three-year term as a director on the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) board of directors from July 1, 2014, through June 30, 2017. She serves a second concurrent one-year term on the AACN Certification Corporation board from July 1, 2016, through June 30, 2017.

Freeland is a senior nurse educator for critical care at University of Rochester Medical Center, Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York, a position she has held since 2005. Since joining the center in 1990, Freeland has filled several nurse manager and nurse educator roles for medical ICUs and a burn/trauma ICU. From 2004-2009, she was the education coordinator for a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services grant that focused on "Transforming ICUs to Retain Staff and Improve Unit Outcomes."

Freeland began her career as an ICU staff nurse at St. James Hospital in Hornell, New York, and then as a registered nurse/clinician in the medical respiratory ICU at Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.

An active AACN volunteer, Freeland has been a board member of the Greater Rochester Area Finger Lakes Chapter, serving as president in 2009-2010. She was a chapter advisor for Region 2 (New York state) from 2011-2014 and co-planner of the AACN Regions 2 and 3 Collaborative in 2011 and 2013. She was a member of the Evidence-Based Webinar Advisory Panel from 2013-2014 and has been an AACN ambassador since 2012.

Freeland is a frequent presenter on topics related to nursing leadership, organ donation, pressure ulcer prevention, healthy work environments and generational diversity. She received the University of Rochester Medical Center Professional Development/Continuing Education Award in 2008 and its Pioneer in Nursing Award in 2010.

She has a master's degree in nursing from University of Rochester and a bachelor's in nursing from Alfred University in Alfred, New York.
