Session Summary

This session presents an advanced overview of dexmedetomidine (Precedex) and its use in the Progressive Care and Stepdown units. Dexmedetomidine is a relatively selective alpha2-adrenergic agonist indicated for use outside of the ICU for improved tolerance of noninvasive respiratory support, alcohol/opiate withdrawal- adjunctive therapy and ICU transfer on low-dose therapy when ICU admission criteria are otherwise no longer met.

Objectives

  • Identify the purpose and rationale for utilizing dexmedetomidine (Precedex) in the Progressive Care and Stepdown units.
  • Describe administration protocols, associated clinical endpoints, and documentation.
  • Discuss how to manage patients undergoing treatment including addressing potential adverse effects.
