Assessing depression in patients hospitalized with coronary heart disease is clinically challenging because depressive symptoms are often confounded by poor somatic health.

Objectives

  • Describe the challenges associated with recognition of depression in patients who are hospitalized with coronary heart disease.
  • Identify the individual symptoms included in the somatic, somatic/affective, and cognitive/affective symptom clusters.
  • Discuss the key findings of this study and their associated nursing implications for improved recognition of depression in patients who are hospitalized with coronary heart disease.
