Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

As nurses, we are familiar with the visible side effects of cancer treatment, such as hair and weight loss. Some very important changes are not so apparent, however. The study and treatment of cardiovascular complications resulting from cancer treatments has emerged in the healthcare landscape. Using a case study approach and recently published American Society of Clinical Oncologist (ASCO) guidelines, this intermediate session uncovers the effects of cancer treatment on the cardiovascular system.

Objectives

  • Identify known cancer treatments which may cause cardiac complications.
  • Apply professional guidelines to the care of the cardio-oncology patient population.
  • Summarize the importance of the interprofessional team in the care of the cardio-oncology patient.
