Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

This session explores myths and stereotypes about the LGBTQ population, addresses real and perceived barriers to open communication and we discuss recent changes to The Joint Commission standards about the LGBTQ patient. A roadmap for staff education, along with strategies to create a more inclusive environment that fosters open communication for LGBTQ patients and families, is presented. LGBTQ patient and staff stories are shared.

Objectives

  • Explore common myths and negative stereotypes preventing effective relationships and communication between LGBTQ patients and healthcare providers.
  • Discuss unique healthcare issues and concerns within the LGBTQ patient population and proactive interventions to address these concerns.
  • Identify evidence-based strategies to create an inclusive environment and improve communication for LGBTQ patients in clinical practice.
