Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Despite the growing numbers of solid organ transplants and caring for a sicker and older patient population, most ICU nurses are unaware of new eligibility criteria and its prioritization of patients who are critically ill and in need of solid organ transplantation. An awareness of exclusion criteria which is absolute versus program specific that may be subjective is important so that nurses can advocate for their patients and help reduce inequities in transplantation. Case studies, the interactive use of scoring tools and polling are used to promote active learning during the session.

Objectives

  • Differentiate eligibility criteria for solid organ transplantation.
  • Identify barriers to solid organ transplantation.
  • Describe technological advances in organ retrieval.
