Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Unconscious bias and microaggressions have an impact on dynamics and well-being of healthcare teams. Experiences of decreased morale and compromised teamwork affect quality-of-patient care. This foundational session presents the journey of a unit that implemented strategies to address microaggression through strategic partnerships, awareness campaigns and response strategies. Knowledge fosters an inclusive environment, thus leading to improved teamwork, patient safety and a supportive workplace.

Objectives

  • Define the impact of subconscious thinking and behaviors, such as microaggressions, within healthcare teams.
  • Examine different responses to microaggressions and their impact on team dynamics and patient safety.
  • Describe one team’s response plan to create an integrated and sustained response to address and mitigate microaggressions.
