The act of bullying in healthcare undermines the well-being of both care providers and patients. Bullying typically leads to moral distress among nursing professionals, and negatively impacts two of AACN’s six essential standards for Healthy Work Environments ― true collaboration and skilled communication. For the sake of nurses and patients, it is critical to recognize bullying as it occurs and address the issues that enable this unacceptable behavior in the workplace. 

This webinar will examine the concept of bullying and its associated continuum of behaviors to help you identify bullying in your environment. The presentation will also review research data on the effects of bullying on you, your colleagues and your patients, and suggest strategies for individuals and those in leadership positions for dealing with bullying behaviors.

Karen Stutzer, PhD,RN

Karen Stutzer is Executive Director, Nursing Practice for Critical Care/Medical Surgical Services and Nursing Education at Chilton Medical Center in Pompton Plains, N.J. Dr. Stutzer has served as a member of the Chilton nursing management team for eight years, in positions including director of critical care services and education manager. Prior to joining Chilton, she held clinical nurse specialist, management and educator positions at five hospitals throughout New Jersey. Dr. Stutzer’s doctoral work at New York University examined moral distress and burnout in relation to job characteristics in critical care nurses. A key contributor to AACN’s Healthy Work Environments (HWE) initiative, she often speaks on HWE standards and disruptive/aggressive workplace behavior. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and AACN’s Northern New Jersey chapter, as well as a past member of AACN’s Board of Directors, Chapter Advisory Team and Circle of Excellence committee.

AACN has been approved as a provider of continuing education in nursing by the California State Board of Nursing California Provider number CEP01036 contact hours (50 min contact hour).

AACN programming meets the standards for most states that require mandatory continuing education contact hours for license and/or certification renewal. AACN recommends consulting with your state board of nursing or credentialing organization before submitting CE to fulfill continuing education requirements.
