Engaging in the democratic process is the hallmark of our nation. The informed, experienced and trusted voices of nurses are vital in the dialogue if we are to realize the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN’s) vision of a healthcare system driven by the needs of patients and their families where nurses make their optimal contribution. While AACN’s mission and non-profit status clearly focus our work on education, we do work with other organizations whose charters and capabilities are focused on advocacy and policy. Because of AACN’s 501(c)3 non-profit tax status, AACN is strictly prohibited from supporting political candidates and campaigns.
To be most effective, a coordinated effort is needed to advance major health policy issues to assure that the needs of patients and their families are met. Thus AACN most often works in coalition with other nursing, physician and healthcare organizations. This collaborative work amplifies the voice of these professionals who are committed to advocating for their patients. AACN is a member of several coalitions, including:
- The Nursing Community
- American Nurses Association’s Organizational Affiliates
- Critical Care Societies Collaborative
- Coalition for Patients’ Rights
