AACN Ongoing Collaborative Activities
American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN-Colleges) and the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties
AACN serves on the nurse practitioner education task force, which provides a forum for input on nurse practitioner education and related topics.
Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation
AACN representatives serve on committees and participate in workgroups on topics including infusion safety, monitoring of patients receiving opioids and alarm management.
Critical Care Societies Collaborative
AACN partners with American College of Chest Physicians, American Thoracic Society and Society of Critical Care Medicine to discuss topics that impact health professionals, patients and families. AACN attends leadership meetings and participates in collaborative activities such as review of competencies, program development, evidence-based guidelines and public guidelines.
Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS)
AACN serves on the CAMTS board of directors. AACN supports interdisciplinary collaboration and provides critical care perspective on medical transport and its impact on patients and nurses.
National Nursing Research Roundtable
AACN participates in this annual research roundtable, whose purpose is to bring together individuals representing member organizations to discuss and disseminate nursing research findings to strengthen nursing practice and improve patient outcomes.
National Student Nurses Association
AACN provides a speaker for a Nursing Specialty Showcase panel discussion at the NSNA annual conference.
National Summit on Advanced Illness – Coalition to Transform Care
AACN participates in this biannual summit, which focuses on topics related to advanced illnesses.
Nursing Organizations Alliance
AACN belongs to and attends meetings of the Nursing Organizations Alliance, which is a coalition of nursing organizations united to be a strong voice for nursing.

Nursing Infection Control Network
AACN is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,the American Nurses Association and 19 other specialty organizations to present webinars, live training sessions, and web based information to empower nurses to respond to highly contagious diseases and to protect themselves and their patients.
2016 Liaison Activities
ANA ‘Gerontological Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice’
AACN is participating in a work group revising the American Nurses Association (ANA) 2010 “Gerontological Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice.”
AACN nurses are involved in focus group sessions with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to discuss nurses’ influence and impact on antibiotic stewardship in intensive care units.
Bystander Response to Catastrophic Events
AACN was invited by the National Security Council at the White House for roundtable discussions on bystanders’ response to catastrophic events. The purpose was to bring together healthcare, public health, public safety, emergency management, fire service, emergency medical management and law enforcement organizations to identify and disseminate actions and tools that the public can use to save lives and build resilience against immediate life-threatening illnesses and injuries, with a focus on bleeding control.
Critical Care World Congress
The congress is co-hosted by the World Federation of Societies of Intensive Care Medicine, World Federation of Critical Care Nurses and World Federation of Pediatric and Critical Care Societies. AACN attended the 2015 Congress in Seoul, Korea and the 2016 congress in Brisbane, Australia.
End-of-Life Care in Hospitals
Hosted by The Hastings Center and the Society of Hospital Medicine, this initiative (in which AACN participated) resulted in an advocacy opportunity in response to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services ruling for reimbursement of advanced care planning.
Moral Distress/Moral Resilience
AACN participated in and provided speakers for the Symposium on Moral Distress/Moral Resilience at Johns Hopkins University
Outcomes After Critical Illness – Delphi Consensus
AACN is participating in a multiyear collaborative with Johns Hopkins University and other researchers and practitioners examining outcome measurement for patients experiencing acute respiratory distress syndrome and acute respiratory failure.
Standardization of IV Concentration and Dosing Units
AACN is participating in work group sessions convened by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and funded by the Food and Drug Administration to discuss standardization of IV medication concentrations and dosing units.
Surviving Sepsis Guidelines
AACN is collaborating with the Society of Critical Care Medicine in the update and revision of the Surviving Sepsis Guidelines.
‘The Third International Consensus Definitions for Sepsis and Septic Shock’
AACN provided comments and endorsement of the Society of Critical Care Medicine/European Society of Intensive Care Medicine’s “The Third International Consensus Definitions for Sepsis and Septic Shock.”
AACN participated in the Annual Forum of the National Patient Safety Foundation.
White Paper – Catastrophic Brain Injuries
AACN is collaborating with the American Society of Transplantation and Critical Care Community of Practice in the development of a white paper, “Ethics, Costs, and Benefits of Treating Patients with Catastrophic Brain Injuries.”

AACN participated in a work group that updated “ANA Cardiovascular Scope and Standards.”
Care of the Critically Ill and Injured During Disasters and Pandemics: Chest Consensus Statement
AACN contributed to, endorsed and reviewed this statement, which offers guidance on how to prepare and manage the critically ill and injured during times of large-scale crisis.
Food and Drug Administration Office of Health and Constituent Affairs (OHCA)
AACN collaborates with OCHA to discuss and communicate important safety, device, medication, webinar, exhibit and advisory panel information.
Respiratory Compromise – A Consortium Roundtable
AACN participated in an interprofessional roundtable discussion, coordinated by the National Association for Medical Direction of Respiratory Care, on the care of patients with respiratory compromise.
Safe Administration of IV Push Medications
AACN participated in the Institute for Safe Medication Practices’ National Summit on the safe administration of IV push medications.
