2012 ACNP Scope and Standards

CCNS Renewal Program Changes

Effective March 31, 2012, renewing CCNSs (and those newly certified) will be given a 5-year certification period. Changes include expanded opportunities to earn CE Points.

For CCNS renewals after January 1, 2014, those renewing by CE Points must complete 150 CE Points, 25 of which must be in Pharmacology.

VA's 'Let's Get Certified Campaign' – Extended for Phase V

To capitalize on the momentum of the past four years, the VA’s “Let’s Get Certified” campaign has been extended for an additional year (Phase V), which will run from June 1, 2012, through May 31, 2013. The VA's campaign targets VA and DoD nurses (U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Public Health Corps).

New CMC and CSC Exams Launched June 20, 2012

AACN Certification Corporation periodically conducts national surveys of practice to update and refresh certification exam test plans. The most recent studies of practice for CMC and CSC were conducted in 2010, resulting in minor changes to the CMC and CSC test plans.

Review the new test plans, sample questions, study references and executive summaries of the CMC and CSC studies of practice. 

CMC & CSC Practice Exams Now Available

Two new practice exam products are now available for purchase in the AACN Online Bookstore:

These booklets are study tools that contain a compilation of questions to be used in helping you prepare to take the cardiac medicine (CMC) subspecialty exam or the cardiac surgery (CSC) subspecialty exam.

Each booklet contains 75 items. Correct answers, along with the corresponding CMC or CSC test plan and study bibliography, are included. Pricing is $8 for AACN members and $10 for nonmembers.

Significant Findings Validating Certification in Two Studies

The first national study to examine all three variables of specialty certification, perceptions of empowerment and intent to stay in position and profession was published in AJCC OnlineFirst, (2/2010) by Joyce J. Fitzpatrick, RN, MBA, PhD, et al.

Another study that found the association between nurses’ perception of overall workplace empowerment and certification was positive and statistically significant was published in AJCC OnlineFirst, (11/2010) by Greta Krapohl, RN, MSN, Milisa Manojlovich, RN, PhD, CCRN, Richard Redman, RN, PhD and Lingling Zhang, MA.

Certification Exams Approved for VA Reimbursement

The ACNPC specialty exam received VA approval (as of March 1, 2010) through the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education. Other approved exams include the CCRN, PCCN and CCNS specialty (as of May 1, 2006) and the CMC and CSC subspecialty (as of February 1, 2007).

Veterans and other eligible persons* who pass the ACNPC, CCRN, PCCN, CCNS, CMC or CSC exam are eligible to be reimbursed the total cost of their exam fee by submitting an Application for Licensing and Certification Testing Fee Reimbursement, along with a copy of their test results and a receipt of exam fee payment, to the Department of Veterans Affairs, P.O. Box 8888, Muskogee, OK 74402-8888.

*Eligible persons are those who qualify for the following: Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB), Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR), Reserve Education Assistance Program (REAP), Veterans Educational Assistance Program (VEAP) or Dependents Educational Assistance (DEA).
