Conquer the AACN Beacon Award! This unit guide offers program information, data strategies, narrative tips and timeline support.

What if your unit's biggest challenges became the backbone of your greatest achievements?

The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) Beacon Award for Excellence is more than a plaque on the wall — it's national recognition of your unit's sustained commitment to exceptional patient care and a healthy work environment (HWE). It's a gold, silver or bronze star that shouts, "We are a unit of excellence!"

Earning this award requires more than good intentions; it demands a thorough, thoughtful and evidence-based application. If your unit is ready to embark on the Beacon journey, here is a breakdown of the key areas and tips for a successful submission.

What is the Beacon Award?

The Beacon Award for Excellence recognizes individual hospital units — not entire facilities — that demonstrate clinical excellence and HWEs. It's a rigorous process that measures a unit's performance against evidence-based national criteria, giving you a valuable road map for continual improvement.

Units are evaluated on three core modules:

  1. Patient Outcomes
  2. Work Environment
  3. Nursing Workforce

Tips for a Successful Application Journey

Applying for the Beacon Award is a marathon, not a sprint. Here are five steps to guide your unit through the process:

  1. Start with 'We' not 'I'

The Beacon Award is for the unit, and the application should reflect a collective journey.

    • Form a Dedicated Beacon Team: Don't let one person carry the weight. Create a diverse team that includes bedside nurses, unit leadership and perhaps a quality or educator partner. Tip: Include updates on the application progress in regular unit meetings.
    • Divide and Conquer: Assign different sections of the application to team members based on their expertise or passion. Tip: Consider having a team leader for each module.
    • Emphasize Staff Ownership: Ask your clinical nurses for input on the qualitative questions. The best stories of success, resilience and ingenuity often come from those at the bedside. Tip: Collect stories, accolades and achievements throughout the year in a digital folder. When you are ready to write your stories, look back through your catalog for the best ones!
  2. Data and Narratives: Tell Your Unit's Story

High-scoring applications demonstrate strong quantitative performance and compelling qualitative narratives.

    • Collect and Benchmark Data: Ensure your outcome data is accurate, complete and clearly presented. Know how to access your unit's data for key metrics, such as CLABSI, CAUTI and turnover. Tip: Human resources and quality departments may help you gather the data for submission.
    • Write Powerful Exemplars: For the narrative sections, provide concrete examples (exemplars) that illustrate your unit's practices. Instead of just saying you use evidence-based practice, describe a patient problem, the evidence you used, the change you implemented and the positive outcome. Tip: Focus on the unit's intervention and response, even when things don't go perfectly. Reviewers want to see resilience and a commitment to correction.
    • Highlight the HWE: The award strongly aligns with AACN's HWE standards. Weave examples of skilled communication, true collaboration, appropriate staffing, meaningful recognition, effective decision-making and authentic leadership into your narratives.
  3. Plan for the Prerequisites and Timeline

All of the data and stories submitted in your application must be from the calendar year before the unit applies. Stay organized and aware of AACN's latest requirements by checking our website.

    • Attend one of AACN's free community education sessions about the program.
    • Complete the HWEAT (Healthy Work Environment Assessment Tool): This free survey is now a prerequisite and must be completed in the year before your application year.
    • Download the Official Handbook: This document is your north star. It details eligibility, scoring guidelines, criteria questions and required data. The handbook includes important policies and procedures for the Beacon Award that must be followed.
    • Plan for Deadlines: Applications open Feb. 1 and are due Aug. 31. Start brainstorming and collecting data well in advance. Tip: Many units scramble at the last minute. Plan to be finished ahead of the deadline in case you experience delays.
  4. Leverage Feedback for Continual Improvement

If your unit has applied before, your previous feedback report is your most valuable asset.

    • Close the Loop: Did the scores indicate opportunities for improvement? Use the time before the next application cycle to implement changes and address those specific areas.
    • Every Beacon Award Level Is Amazing: Our data shows that Beacon Award units exceed the highest levels of performance seen in other industry benchmarks! We know you want gold, but every achievement level is a step on your Beacon journey. Tip: Celebrate your achievement with your staff before reviewing your feedback and setting goals for your next application.
  5. Break Down the Beast: 'Weekly Win' Strategy

Whether this is your first or fifth application, develop a plan to submit your application on time.

    • Identify who is leading what work:
      • What data needs to be gathered?
      • Who will write each exemplar?
    • Make time for brainstorming and discussion in the second or third month, once everyone has reviewed and reflected on the questions.
    • Plan to complete the exemplars in June, so there is time for review and revision in July.
    • Prepare for your final review and submission by Aug. 31.

The Beacon Award for Excellence is a journey of self-reflection, celebration and continual growth. By collaborating, collecting evidence and clearly telling your unit's story, you put your unit in the running for national recognition and, more importantly, you create a stronger, healthier and better environment for your patients and your nurses.
