Advocacy Initiatives

The AACN community influences health policy in many ways, advocating for specific national issues that align with our mission, vision and strategic direction. We work in coalition with organizations such as The Nursing Community and the Critical Care Societies Collaborative, and as an organizational affiliate of the American Nurses Association.

Healthy Work Environments

Workplaces can be transformed when all health care professionals and organizations are accountable for addressing barriers to creating and sustaining healthy work environments.

Palliative and End-of-Life Care

Long-term changes in health care institutions can substantially improve care for dying people and their families.

Staffing and Workforce Development

Critical care staffing levels must be driven by the unique needs of each patient and the competencies of the nurse.

Healthcare Reform

AACN joins nursing organizations in offering to advise on healthcare reform.

The Nursing Community

The Nursing Community is a coalition of national professional nursing associations dedicated to building consensus and advocating on a wide spectrum of healthcare and nursing issues, including practice, education and research. Visit The Nursing Community for a comprehensive overview of AACN’s legislative and policy activities.

Liaison Activities

We have represented high acuity and critical care nurses at more than 40 national forums and decision-making tables through liaison assignments and endorsement activities, such as:
  • 1Actively participating in the Licensure, Accreditation, Certification and Education (LACE) work group to implement the APRN Consensus Model, and continuing our outreach work with program directors to review and approve curriculum for their programs.

  • 2Participating in the multidisciplinary revision of the Surviving Sepsis Guidelines.

  • 3Participating in roundtable discussions — invited by the National Security Council at the White House — on bystanders’ response to catastrophic events.
