Project Goals/Objectives:

  1. Reduce RN turnover 10%
  2. Reduce NA turnover 20%
  3. Reduce Oldenburg Burnout Inventory 75% and increase work satisfaction 75%
  4. Increase Healthy Work Environment Assessment Tool-(HWEAT) response rate at six months to 60% from 22.9% at baseline and improve Appropriate Staffing score to 4.5 from 2.8 at baseline

Project Outcomes:

  1. Decreased RN turnover from 12 to 2 = 600%
  2. Increased NA turnover from 3 to 5
  3. Decreased overall Oldenburg5 Burnout Inventory score from 69% to 63% and increased Work Satisfaction 3% change from baseline
  4. Increased HWEAT response Rate from 22.9% to 56.5%
  5. Increased Appropriate Staffing Score from 2.8 to 3.05.
  6. These outcomes resulted in a positive estimated annual fiscal impact of $1,222,000* (Note no fiscal impact for NA turnover calculated. This would decrease the overall fiscal impact of this project if able to calculate)

Project Overview:

Burnout is a common topic and concern among healthcare personnel in 10 Reynolds Tower and has led to an increase in RN and NA turnover.

The team used the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory and the Healthy Work Environment Assessment Tool Team Version to assess the team. The CSI team implemented color-coded magnets that unit staff used to indicate their workload that shift to help self-identify and also promote team collaboration. During our project kickoff, we aligned on strategic plans and gathered valuable, mixed insights from both veteran and new employees.

Following the completion of our baseline data collection, subsequent surveys revealed a reduction in the overall Oldenburg Burnout Inventory scores alongside a positive increase in HWEAT scores. We acknowledge that, in the face of increased patient acuity, we cannot change staff-to-patient ratios. However, we can utilize tools to better manage patient assignments.
