Session Summary

Session includes ECMO indications/contraindications, interfacility referral criteria and differentiation of flow versus sweep speed. Real-time titration is appraised in V-A/V-V ECMO for goal-directed care, brain death testing and ethical analysis of patient selection/criteria for nonbeneficial care in ECMO palliation and death. Advanced case studies analyze ECMO deescalation/decannulation in the setting of nonbeneficial care, sweep titration in CO2 responsiveness/apnea testing, goal-directed care with patient-specific ECMO titration and defining death while accenting interdisciplinary care and APRN roles. Pharmacology content = 20%

Objectives

  • Analyze ECMO candidacy indications and clinical triggers for cannulation and referral if patient is not at an ECMO-capable facility.
  • Use clinical data real-time in patient-specific titration of ECMO flow and sweep speed based on endpoints, complications and futility.
  • Define ECMO endpoints, ethical analysis, complications, nonbeneficial care and death pronouncement when titrating ECMO support.
