Session Summary

This session addresses the complexities of alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) in acutely ill patients, focusing on specialty populations like young adults, the elderly and pregnant patients. We explore pathophysiology masked by coexisting conditions; review pharmacological interventions, including benzodiazepines, anticonvulsants, GABA analogues, anesthetics, alpha-2 adrenergic agonists, beta-adrenergic antagonists and nonpharmacological therapies; and discuss tailored treatments for these populations. Emphasis is on interdisciplinary collaboration and the APRN’s role in implementing evidence-based strategies, improving outcomes and enhancing nursing practice. Pharmacology content = 75%

Objectives

  • Identify specific characteristics of AWS that may be masked by pharmacological interventions in critically ill patients.
  • Analyze pathophysiology of AWS and the effectiveness of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions to impact patient outcomes.
  • Outline common pitfalls in acute care that can lead to challenges in managing specialty populations with alcohol withdrawal.
