Session Summary

Caring for pregnant patients admitted to the critical care environment can cause anxiety for non-obstetric providers. Knowledge of expected physiologic changes and key practice pearls can boost provider confidence and patient outcomes. This session includes case studies to apply the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Guidelines. Details are provided about the process of choosing the correct medications and dosing alterations in this population. Considerations for fetal well-being and a review of drugs that cross the placenta barrier and lactation considerations in the post-partum period are explained. Pharmacology content = 50%

Objectives

  • List the physiologic changes and clinical implications which occur as a patient’s body adapts to pregnancy.
  • Identify practice pearls for critically ill pregnant patients, applying ACOG practice algorithms.
  • Explain the changes in pharmacokinetics and the impact of fetal medication risk on prescribing practices for pregnant patients.
