Session Summary

Polysubstance abuse disorder (SUD) is a significant issue throughout the world, but especially in the United States. SUD serves as a major risk factor for higher-acuity illness and is associated with poor outcomes. Especially difficult is managing patients' pain, anxiety and potential withdrawal. This session provides advanced content on the impact of SUD on critical illness. Common substance combinations are explored along with the pathophysiologic effects of these substances. Issues with assessment, management (including airway, hemodynamic stabilization, agitation/delirium, and antidotes) are discussed. Ethical and post-ICU considerations are reviewed in the session. Pharmacology content = 50%

Objectives

  • Define polysubstance abuse by identifying substance combinations commonly presented in critical care.
  • Describe the pathophysiological effects of polysubstance abuse in critically ill patients.
  • Analyze the toxidrome findings and the impact on diagnostic and critical care-related challenges.
