Session Summary

Managing patients with left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) in the inpatient setting presents unique challenges for APRNs. This session demystifies LVAD care by focusing on essential knowledge of device components, physiology and function. Participants learn assessment strategies, including how to monitor device function, interpret alarms and recognize complications. Case-based discussions allow attendees to apply critical thinking in the development of care plans for hospitalized patients with LVADs. Pharmacology content = 25%

Objectives

  • Identify the indications, components and essential physiology of LVADs, including key considerations of inpatient management.
  • Apply assessment techniques to monitor LVAD function, interpret alarms and identify common complications in hospitalized patients.
