Session Summary

This case-based presentation explores ICU scenarios where early signs of deterioration are missed, leading to delayed diagnosis and treatment. Using the ICU Time Machine framework and visual storytelling, APRNs revisit each case to identify missed clues, understand the role of cognitive bias and system factors, and reflect on how to improve real-time clinical decision-making. The session builds purposeful foresight to reduce diagnostic delays in high-acuity settings.

Objectives

  • Identify common patterns of missed early deterioration in ICU patients and describe their clinical significance.
  • Analyze how cognitive bias, personal assumptions, and system-level factors contribute to diagnostic delay.
  • Apply strategies to respond more intentionally and confidently in the face of diagnostic uncertainty—on purpose.
