Session Summary

The benefits of SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists, beyond their original purpose of glucose control, have some referring to these agents as wonder drugs. Evidence shows their benefit to patients with heart failure, chronic kidney disease, obesity and cardiovascular disease. APRNs must be aware of individuals who may benefit from being prescribed an SGLT2 inhibitor or a GLP-1 receptor agonist. This session describes the indications for and the pharmacology of SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists. Case studies illustrate the benefits and risks associated with prescribing these medications. Pharmacology content = 100%

Objectives

  • Identify the mechanism of action, metabolism, dosing, side effects and cost of select SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists.
  • Explain the cardiovascular, metabolic and renal benefits of SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists.
  • Describe the risks associated with SGLT2 and GLP-1 inhibitor therapies.
