Session Summary

Rapid sequence intubation (RSI) is a critical procedure used to quickly secure an airway in patients who are unstable and at risk for aspiration. It involves the administration of intravenous sedatives and neuromuscular blocking agents to facilitate intubation. This presentation explores commonly used agents such as etomidate, ketamine, propofol, succinylcholine and rocuronium and examine their pharmacologic profiles and hemodynamic effects following RSI. Recommendations based on the 2023 Society of Critical Care Medicine Clinical Practice Guidelines for RSI are also explored. Pharmacology content = 70%

Objectives

  • Describe the indications and critical techniques for rapid sequence intubation (RSI) to rapidly secure an airway.
  • Discuss pharmacologic profiles, mechanisms of action, hemodynamic effects of sedatives and neuromuscular blocking agents used in RSI.
  • Apply evidence-based recommendations from the 2023 SCCM Clinical Practice Guideline for patient safety and outcomes during peri-RSI period.
