Session Summary

When the prognosis for your patient with a brain injury is unclear, knowing what to say to the family can be a challenge. This session reviews the latest guidelines and evidence on neuroprognostication for moderate-to-severe TBI, intracerebral hemorrhage and postcardiac arrest coma. Learn practical timelines, tools and multimodal assessments to guide outcome prediction. We also discuss the emerging field of neuropalliative care and how this field can help frame tough conversations and support caregivers in combating moral distress when caring for neurologically injured patients.

Objectives

  • Review timelines and key factors for neuroprognosis in TBI, ICH and postarrest coma per latest Neurocritical Care Guidelines.
  • Analyze how neuro exams, imaging, EEG and SSEPs guide accurate, ethical prognostic assessments using a multimodal approach.
  • Devise strategies to share prognostic uncertainty and support families via shared decision-making in neurocritical care settings.
