Session Summary

Abusive head trauma is a leading cause of fatal head injury in infants and a major contributor to morbidity in young children. This session prepares nurses to recognize and respond to these critical cases using updated clinical guidance, hallmark injury patterns, red flag histories and an exploration of disparities in diagnosis. Through interactive case studies, participants engage in exercises to explore personal assumptions and apply evidence-based tools that support more equitable care.

Objectives

  • Analyze clinical findings and imaging features associated with abusive head trauma.
  • Apply updated diagnostic and management guidance to suspected abusive head trauma cases.
  • Identify in self-reflection exercises to reduce bias and strengthen equity in clinical decision-making.
