Session Summary

The liver is an amazing organ, hosting a wide variety of functions. When the liver fails, more than ALT and AST are affected. This lecture utilizes case studies to explore how liver failure alters labs like bleeding time, bilirubin, albumin, ammonia and glucose. We use three case studies to compare labs: an acute liver failure case, an end-stage cirrhosis case and, lastly, a cholestasis case study. A deeper understanding of lab results can better help us plan and provide interventions that make a difference for our patients.

Objectives

  • Cite labs often seen in acute, chronic and end-stage liver disease.
  • Describe the pathophysiology behind common lab tests.
  • Identify nursing interventions for our patients based on diagnosis, patient condition and lab results.
