Session Summary

This is not a session for the faint of heart. The resurgence in nursing research is driving a paradigm shift in intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring. The Monroe-Kellie doctrine is coming under new criticism. Nursing knowledge of measurement science and integrated computerized technology is fueling a need for industry-wide changes. This session highlights historical literature that influences the current paradigm and recent evidence of new solutions for the future of ICP monitoring.

Objectives

  • Review the development of existing literature on intracranial pressure monitoring.
  • Discuss recent literature that signals a trend in how ICP monitoring may change over the next decade.
  • Identify specific strategies nurses can use to improve the reliability and validity of ICP.
