Session Summary

The onus of critical illness may lurk within soft tissues of the body. Nurses learn to maintain vigilance for these conditions and to intervene rapidly. This session explores the potentially life-threatening infections which may occur in those with urologic or skin abnormalities, both of which are risk factors for the development of these disorders. Aggressive management techniques to eradicate these infections often yield complex, gaping wounds which require intensive nursing care. Nurses learn postoperative management strategies which can improve outcomes for these critically ill patients.

Objectives

  • Review the incidence, etiology and risk factors for varied necrotizing skin and soft tissue infections (NSTIs).
  • Analyze the clinical evaluation and acute management of necrotizing fasciitis, including Fournier’s gangrene and Ludwig’s angina.
  • Evaluate the significant symptoms and potential for rapid deterioration associated with NSTI's, potentially catastrophic illnesses.
