Session Summary

Diabetes management is rapidly evolving to include many new drug classes and increasing reliance on technology to help maintain glycemic control. Hospitalized patients, especially those in critical care, may experience significant safety risks due to long drug half-lives and medication side effects. This presentation provides an overview of the different medication classes commonly prescribed, and discussion of side effects, risks and benefits. Practice recommendations for insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring in the hospital are also discussed. Pharmacology content = 50%

Objectives

  • Identify one class of medications commonly used in diabetes management.
  • List side effects of the GLP-1 agonists which could impact safety in the hospitalized patient.
  • Discuss the differences between interstitial glucose values and capillary blood glucose values.
