Session Summary

Respiratory dialysis, extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal and venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation are extracorporeal respiratory support therapies used in managing respiratory failure. This intermediate session presents clinical rationales, physiological mechanisms and evidence-based practices for the use of ERSTs in acutely ill adult patients. Case studies highlight patient selection, practical considerations and potential complications to enhance application to critical care clinical practice.

Objectives

  • Compare key similarities and differences in the mechanisms of action among various extracorporeal respiratory support therapies (ERST).
  • Describe the clinical indications, contraindications, and patient selection criteria for each type of ERST.
  • Identify emerging opportunities for use of respiratory dialysis and extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal in critical care.
