Session Summary

This case-based session walks participants through the early signs of patient decompensation across shock types, focusing on subtle assessment findings which indicate impaired perfusion before hypotension occurs. Grounded in current evidence and designed to mimic real-life bedside encounters both within the ICU and beyond during rapid response situations, this session emphasizes the nurse’s role in pattern recognition, clinical judgment, timely intervention and strategies to effectively advocate for escalation of care in time-critical situations.

Objectives

  • Identify early, evidence-based indicators of shock that precede hypotension in clinical case scenarios.
  • Analyze trending assessment data and clinical findings to differentiate compensated shock from other causes of deterioration.
  • Construct an evidence-informed plan of action to escalate care during the compensated phase of shock.
