Session Summary

In spite of a decade-long history of recognition, post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) continues to plague critical illness survivors today. The bedside nurse plays a key role in the care of patients in the critical care unit and the post-ICU acute care unit. The bedside nurse must be knowledgeable of PICS and the A-F Bundle, ensuring the implementation of the bundle beyond the walls of the ICU. This session provides the critical care and acute care nurse with the tools to improve the post-ICU patient's care and stimulate practice changes.

Objectives

  • Describe post-intensive care syndrome and the ICU survivor.
  • Discuss the importance of components of the A-F bundle in post-ICU acute care.
  • Identify essential nursing practices for post-ICU acute care.
